Want to see league feedback on this:
Currently it is too easy to extend players in game. IRL, the top players never extend cause they can get more money and more opportunities in FA. The only players who sign extensions are role players or players still on their rookie deal.
To keep things more realistic, and to stop FA from being weakened too much, we are proposing the following 4 rules of extension eligibility:
1. The player must be extension eligible in game, and in the last of year of their deal. 2. He must either be on his rookie contract OR, 3. Earning a contract with a base of less than 12M AND, 4. The base must be 120% value of the last year of his last contract.
So for instance, a guy like Kyrie or AD can be extended but Dwight or CP3 cannot. You still have their bird rights, however, which means you have a high chance of retention.
Also, this allows you to extend your supporting cast but not underpay them, as they would just go to FA IRL.
Thoughts?

I agree that some sort of rules need to be put in place becasue in game you can re-sign literally every player you want, assuming you have the necessary cap space.

You don't even need cap space to resign them. In game you can literally go as high as you please, you could have a team salary of 100M+ if you feel like it.

Also the mother team owns bird rights so if OKC or LAC or whoever fears losing their top players, just offer them the max in FA, you have the advantage in years and money and raises.

If you are talking about FA, the game engine.

Thank goodness not only a mod but the Co-Commissioner brought this up.
I for one don't mind FA's staying with their current teams but man....as I stated in trade chatter, FA's extending before was a foregone conclusion which gave the team with the player ultimate decision making on keeping player and if they were a franchise player then forget about seeing em in FA.
Love this idea, rather teams have a chance to get spurned than not having a chance at all, and not saying this cause I have a team built for FA but it makes this sim real and that's how it should be to reflect the real NBA.
Appreciate ya Myles for even bringing this up.

Yeah, most of the upper-echelon sim leagues have restructured extensions so that there's a much better chance of a stronger FA market (And one in particular guarantees a wild free agency every year by having almost no extensions, if any).
An occasional weak FA class is to be expected, but when it's year after year of fifth starters/role players, then cap space only becomes useful for making luxury tax teams pay to get out of financial trouble... the same payment they'd have to make for LT penalties in most cases, so it nerfs those GMs who have a build via FA approach.

I also like the idea. Free Agency tends to be a bit boring, and even with this rules team with the bird rights we'll have the higthest change to be able to lock those players. But at least they'll be available to bet, and maybe sometime we have one of those high ranking players chosing another team and making things more interesting. I little dosis of Dwightmare doesn't have to be that bad, and it's a big part of real NBA

Adding to this would even be great to see depending on how things go with their teams, the actual option for LeBron Wade and Bosh to opt out although I'm not sure it could be overwritten as their contracts are all set but LeBron is locked up until 2016 I believe in the sim while irl he is keeping Miami on pins and needles for 2014.
Just a thought.

We can't do that, don't have access to that kind of stuff.

Sounds like a good way to up FA activity and create more realism.
